Refractive Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens.  Cataracts can result in decreased vision and/or problems with glare.  The only treatment for cataracts is surgery to remove the clouded natural lens and implant a synthetic “intraocular” lens. This outpatient surgery is very quick and patients can go home as soon as it’s over. It can now be performed in a safe, predictable fashion with the assistance of a laser and there are several different implant options available to reduce the need for glasses after the surgery.

  • With cataract surgery, the eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant (called an intraocular lens or IOL).
  • Conventional Lens: With a conventional replacement lens, the patient can choose to correct either near vision OR distance vision if they lack significant astigmatism without glasses. The patient will still need glasses either to see clearly for distance or near.
  • Advanced Lens/Vision Correction options: Following options are available to our patient’s for additional cost if the patient desires the latest treatment options and has a desire to reduce or possibly eliminate the need for glasses.

Advanced Lens Correction Options., i.e. Premium IOLs:

Astigmatism Correcting or Toric Lens

  • IOL with astigmatism correction built into the lens
  • Helps patients who have astigmatism to reduce (or possibly eliminate) the need for distance eyeglasses.

Multifocal Lens

  • Multifocal IOL helps to see both near and distance without glasses
  • A series of focal zones or rings is designed into the IOL. Depending on where incoming light focuses through the zones, the patient may be able to see both near and distant objects clearly.

Advanced Surgical Treatment Options:

Limbal Relaxing Incisions:

  • Small incisions are placed in the cornea either during cataract surgery or after surgery to correct astigmatism to allow the cornea’s shape to be rounder or more symmetrical
  • Will help patients who have astigmatism to reduce (or possibly eliminate) the need for distance eyeglasses.

Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery:

  • A Femtosecond laser is used to create precise incisions and customized treatment plans while softening the cataract inside
  • Creates a safer and more accurate procedure for the patient, decreasing recovery and increasing accuracy.

ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) Cataract Surgery:

  • ORA provides real-time optical feedback during surgery, allowing for the most accurate choice of implant power
  • ORA assists in providing precise placement of a Toric implant for optimal vision results
