Tear Drainage Surgery

Tearing is a common problem, and can occur for a number of reasons. Your ophthalmologist will perform an evaluation to determine the likely cause of tearing.

Occasionally, tearing can be caused by narrowing or blockage of the tear drainage system (also known as the nasolacrimal duct system). There may or may not be an infection present. A simple surgery may be recommended to open the system and improve tear drainage.  This is done as an out-patient, and the majority of patients experience improvement in the ensuing weeks.
